Position Title: Marketing and Community Engagement Internship

Location: Lookingglass Theater

Fixed Pay Per Semester: $4500

Hours: 15 hours per week / Hybrid / The Lookingglass administrative team regularly work onsite at 163 E Pearson St, Chicago IL 60611 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but exact in-person and remote hours may be determined by the Education Director

About Us

Lookingglass Theatre Company is one of the country’s largest ensemble theatres dedicated to creating new work that redefines the theatrical experience and makes it more exhilarating, inspirational, and accessible. Now in its 38th year and based in the historic Water Tower Water Works on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, the Company is known for story-centered, visually rich productions. A 2011 Tony Award recipient for Outstanding Regional Theatre, Lookingglass also shares its ensemble-based techniques with students, teachers, community organizations, and corporations through its Department of Curiosity, which cultivates creativity, expands access, and helps “change, charge, and empower” classrooms and communities across Chicago.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Marketing and Community Engagement Intern will design and create content for social media and e-newsletters, write marketing copy, make website updates, and support community engagement through emails and phone calls.  They will support the theatre’s creative, empowering, anti-racist and inclusive practices.  The intern will: 

  • Develop marketing budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources, and tracking actual spend against budget. 
  • Analyze marketing campaign budgets, expenses, and ROI to assess financial performance and identify areas for improvement
  • Analyze marketing data to identify trends, measure campaign effectiveness, and inform future strategies
  • Conduct research on audience trends and market conditions
  • Collaborate with Lookingglass Director of Education and Marketing Manager and organizational partners to build and execute marketing that aligns with the artistic season at Lookingglass.

Successful candidates will: 

  • Demonstrate excellent written communication skills. 
  • Learn new systems and software for mass emails, social media content and website design.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to their education and professional development.
  • Appropriately follow protocols for recording hours worked 
  • Attend Lookingglass trainings and professional development workshops, as applicable
  • Demonstrate commitment to expanding their own professional and creative practice 
  • Participate in organization-wide anti-racism work and incorporate an anti-racist lens into daily practice. This work, by the Board, Ensemble, and staff, is ongoing.

Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate student with coursework or experience in digital marketing, communications, or design
  • Interest in marketing, communications, and community engagement initiatives
  • Appreciation for the performing arts (no prior theatre experience required)
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
